For the last 1½ years, I had been playing Scrabble variants on a website called https://anadro.me. I came to know about it from variants channel in Woogles discord in October 2024 which will be always accessible at https://discord.com/channels/74132167782...619635710296064. It contained 40 different bonus tiles and although some of bonus tiles are restricted only to English (and Latin script based languages without any of accent tiles), it had been a lot of fun that I found nowhere else available on the Internet. The website had been created in 2013 and had been shut down last week. Playing Scrabble in different languages (even like Tamil or Maths with or without fractional tiles) came nowhere near to the fun playing with 40 different bonus squares.
It had been a completely different world of Scrabble in which Scrabble variants could be played with different board layouts, designed by the users and stored in the website, different board sizes from 7×7 to 50×50 and with 40 different fun bonus squares. Each of the board layouts had different objectives for winning:
1. Take a single shot with a long word with a power tile or with the last letters in the alphabet to score high. 2. Fight for a few high scoring spots on the board. 3. Extend already existing words on board in either direction to score high. 4. Play a lot of anadromes (words whose reverse also form a valid word) and palindromes (words which are also the same in reverse direction) to score high. 5. Play a lot of connected words and bingo words to score high.
Scores with plenty of digits are achievable and it can be said that opponent player is a few digits higher (and not few points higher). In the website, the highest achievable score had been 2¹⁰²⁴ or 1.798×10³⁰⁸. Anything, higher than that becomes Infinity and gives the win to the player immediately. In any of other implementations, this upper limit on score can be removed.
The bonus tiles that are restricted only to English (and Latin script based languages without any of accent tiles) are Double Consonants, Triple Vowels, Double Letters With Vertical Symmetry, Triple Letters With Horizontal Symmetry, Quadruple Letters With Rotational Symmetry and Position In Alphabet.
The differences from conventional Scrabble are that it used older Loren Brichter dictionary, which is available at https://github.com/lorenbrichter/Words, which is essentially older CSW2012 dictionary with some of additional added words (this can be updated to CSW2024 dictionary in any of other implementations) and words can be played both forward and backward. If a word is valid both in forward direction as well as in backward direction, then it is scored in both directions. In conventional Scrabble board layout, anadromes (words whose reverse also form a valid word) and palindromes (words which are also the same in reverse direction) usually will score roughly twice as much. The bonus score for bingo words is always 5×Number Of Tiles In Rack. Number of tiles in rack varies from 7 for 7×7 boards to 13 for 50×50 boards. Letter distribution, number of points for each letter, number of tiles in rack and dictionary words cannot be specified by the user. There are no random letters as well. There are 20 days for each of the turns by the players and upto 100 games can be in any of player's list of all of active games at any one time.
Also, there are no blank tiles and letter distribution is based on the ratio of number of occurrence of each letter in Loren Brichter dictionary to number of tiles in bag rounded off to nearest integer. Finally, the points for each letter is higher than whatever is in conventional Scrabble and covers all the numbers from 1 to 10, as follows:
A
B
C
D
E
F
G
H
I
J

And so, it will be possible to have fun with powers of all of numbers from 1 to 10 (and from 1 to 26 with the Position In Alphabet bonus tile), as scores.
It would be more interesting if at least latest version 4.0 of Scrabble3D is made even more fun by adding a lot of special bonus squares.
There is also 41st wall tile on which none of the letters can be placed.
Otherwise, this is how scoring in Anadrome actually worked out:
1. First, letters may be re-valued: Reviver: Always makes all of bonus tiles in its entire word usable, whether it is covered in current turn or in older turns. Zero: Letter value is 0. One: Letter value is 1. Two: Letter value is 2. Three: Letter value is 3. Four: Letter value is 4. Five: Letter value is 5. Six: Letter value is 6. Seven: Letter value is 7. Eight: Letter value is 8. Nine: Letter value is 9. Ten: Letter value is 10. Fifty: Letter value is 50. Hundred: Letter value is 100. Inverter: Inverts letter value by subtracting it from 10. Alphabet: Letter value is its place in alphabet. Ceiling: Use highest valued letter for all in word (Cancelled by floor.). Floor: All letters worth 1 (Cancelled by ceiling.). 2. Then, category bonuses are applied to applicable letters: Triple Vowels: Triples all vowel values in word including Y. Double Consonants: Doubles all consonant values in word excluding Y. Double Vertical Symmetry: Doubles all letters with vertical symmetry in word (AHIMOQTUVWXY.). Triple Horizontal Symmetry: Triples all letters with horizontal symmetry in word (BCDEHIKOX.). Quadruple Rotational Symmetry: Quadruple all letters with 180° rotational symmetry in word (HINOSXZ.). 3. Then, single-letter bonuses are applied: Regular: No bonus. Double Letter: Doubles letter value. Triple Letter: Triples letter value. Quadruple Letter: Quadruples letter value. Letter Squared: Squares letter value. Factorial: Multiply letter value by all integers below it to 1. Plus: Add the next letter's value to this one (Next letter is 1st letter for last letter.). Times: Multiply this letter's value by the next (Next letter is 1st letter for last letter.). Power: Exponentiate this letter's value by the next (Next letter is 1st letter for last letter.). Mimic: Letter value is equal to next letter's value (Next letter is 1st letter for last letter.). Sum: Letter value is sum of all letters in word. 4. Then, letter values are combined into a word score: Product: Multiply (instead of add) values together to get word score (power number of product tiles that are consumed.). 5. Then, word bonuses are applied: Double Word: Doubles word value. Triple Word: Triples word value. Quadruple Word: Quadruples word value. Length Squared: Add word length squared.
Here are a few of example games that had been shared by me and some of other players in variants channel in Woogles discord:
César Del Solar is the creator of https://woogles.io, a popular Scrabble website. Me: (8²⁵ = 2⁷⁵) by Lux bot with ZY sequence versus (9²⁵ = 3⁵⁰) by me with XY sequence. Me: This is with my own created board, but I temporarily made it to be private as of right now, as it is possible to score Infinity, or > 2¹⁰²⁴ points with this board, thereby abruptly ending up with the game and spoiling up with all of the fun. (9¹⁶² = 3³²⁴) by Lux bot versus 20¹²⁶ by me.
César Del Solar: It would be nice to have even bigger numbers, like G64 (Graham's Number), although the smaller numbers are probably still fine (G1 through G63; G1 itself, if written in the tiniest digits possible, would still be big enough to fill the observable universe, and G64 is incomprehensibly larger than it.). Or even TREE(3). G64 is much much smaller than TREE(3). Me: Close game at astronomical scale.
César Del Solar: Not super close, you won by 4 orders of magnitude. Me: Both of my score and Lux bot's score were hovering closer to Infinity, or > 2¹⁰²⁴ points, until Lux bot played a turn with Infinity score, or > 2¹⁰²⁴ points.
César Del Solar: In that last one, you are up 2.656×10²⁹⁵ to 1.874×10²⁸⁶. So, your score minus their score is basically 2.656×10²⁹⁵. That was the score until the penultimate turn. Then, Lux bot scored Infinity, or > 2¹⁰²⁴ points with turn of ORIXAS / EX / HA. 2¹⁰²⁴ points is the maximum number of points anyone can be able to score in https://anadro.me/. Anything greater than that will be represented as Infinity and it will abruptly terminate up with the played game in progress. Me: Close game at astronomical scale. Or is it just not super close, simply, but I won by about either (9¹⁰⁰ = 3²⁰⁰) points, or about 95 orders of magnitude? (10¹⁰⁰ + 8¹⁰⁰ = 10¹⁰⁰ + 2³⁰⁰) by Lux bot versus (10¹⁰⁰ + 9¹⁰⁰ = 10¹⁰⁰ + 3²⁰⁰) by me.
César Del Solar: Yeah, not super close, you won by about 2.656×10⁹⁵, or ~ 265611952000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 points.
Uruwi (flirora on Woogles) and Fj00 (Erickson Smith, creator of Common English Lexicon, CEL2021 dictionary on Woogles and BobaFett on Woogles) played a game with my created board, Power Alphabet Interleave.
The letter that will be placed on power tile will be powered by the position in the alphabet of next letter in the word that will be placed in the alphabet tile, if the alphabet tile is placed on the current turn and by value of next letter in the word, otherwise. For the last letter in the word that will be placed on power tile, it will be powered by the position in the alphabet of 1st letter in the word for even lengths of the word if the 1st letter in the word is an alphabet tile that is placed on the current turn and by value of 1st letter in the word, otherwise.
Both of them swapped tiles a few times. After that, Fj00 played JYMOLD for the maximum possible score of 10²⁵ points. Only 3 of possible words in CSW2024 dictionary would have scored a maximum of 10²⁵ points, JYMOLD, JYNX and JYNXES. Even ZELATRIX with X in power tile and with Z in alphabet tile would have only scored 9²⁶ = 3⁵² = 6.461×10²⁴ points. Before JYMOLD had been played, Fj00 had been down by several quadrillions, but eventually, it turned out that he won the game that had been played against Uruwi, at last. For programming a computer to play conventional Scrabble, what tiles that you leave in rack is also more important than the high scores that are played on the board. For example, you would like to get rid of vowels in vowel heavy racks, consonants in consonant heavy racks, multiple occurrences of same letter, bad letter combinations, rarely used letters, etc. to form bingo words.
But for different board layouts that are available in Anadrome, it is not possible to calculate equity losses by taking into account what tiles that you leave in rack and you will have to use simple brute force approach for calculating each of the best moves that are playable for each of the different turns for each of the different board layouts.
https://anadro.me, the most interesting word game that I had ever played on the Internet had been shut down last week after Revathy Vasudevan from Chennai Scrabble Club WhatsApp group registered and made her 1st move.
I am looking forward at least towards latest version 4.0 of Scrabble3D to have the fun board layouts, whatever that had been supported by Anadrome, as this is a PC application and does not incur the server hosting fees every year that a web application like Anadrome had.
I hope that it will not be too much of work, just need to define several new bonus tiles and write out the algorithm to calculate the scores according to each of new bonus tiles.
If you had played a few games on Anadrome, then you would have realized how interesting playing on plenty of fun bonus tiles are.
After playing with plenty of fun bonus tiles in Anadrome for last 1½ years, I really find playing with a few bonus tiles in Scrabble3D and in any other Scrabble software application that is available on the Internet to be boring.
I missed the 40th starting square above.
Here are a few examples of how scoring with some of fun bonus tiles in Anadrome actually worked out:
QUA played on U re-valued to its position in alphabet, 21 points. Score: 10²¹ + 21 + 1 = 1.000×10²¹ points. QUA played on Double consonants applied to Q, but not to U or A. Score: 20²¹ + 21 + 1 = 2.097×10²⁷ points. QUA played on Triple vowels applied to U and A, but not to Q. Score: 10⁶³ + 63 + 3 = 1.000×10⁶³ points. QUA played on Double letters with vertical symmetry applied to Q, U and A. Score: 20⁴² + 42 + 2 = 4.398×10⁵⁴ points. QUA played on Triple letters with horizontal symmetry not applied to Q, U or A. Score: 10²¹ + 21 + 1 = 1.000×10²¹ points. QUA played on Quadruple letters with rotational symmetry not applied to Q, U or A. Score: 10²¹ + 21 + 1 = 1.000×10²¹ points. QUA played on Because of ceiling tile, all letters are re-valued to 21 points. Score: 21²¹ + 21 + 21 = 5.843×10²⁷ points. QUA played on Because of floor tile, all letters are re-valued to 1 point. Score: 1¹ + 1 + 1 = 3 points.
EXCITED played on Because of at least 1 product tile, the scores of each of the letters will be multiplied, instead of added. And the resulting score will be powered by the number of product tiles that will be covered in that turn. Score: (1 × 9 × 3 × 1 × 2 × 1 × 3)⁷ = 2928229434235008 points. EXCITED played on Because of ceiling tile, all letters are worth 9 points, which is the maximum in the word, otherwise, according to letter X. Score: (9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9)⁶ = 1.197×10⁴⁰ points. EXCITED played on Score: (9⁹ × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9)⁵ = 3.700×10⁷¹ points. EXCITED played on Score: (9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9)⁴ = 6.170×10⁸⁷ points. EXCITED played on Score: (9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9)³ = 5.553×10⁸⁸ points. EXCITED played on Score: (9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9 × 9 × 9)² = 2.697×10⁷⁴ points. EXCITED played on Score: 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9⁹ × 9 × 9 = 7.070×10⁴⁴ points. EXCITED played on Score: 9⁹ + 9⁹ + 9⁹ + 9⁹ + 9⁹ + 9⁹ + 9 = 2324522943 points. EXCITED played on Score: 1⁹ + 9³ + 3¹ + 1² + 2¹ + 1³ + 3¹ = 740 points.
By the way, double consonants, triple vowels, double letters with vertical symmetry, triple letters with horizontal symmetry and quadruple letters with rotational symmetry are applied before power.
On the other hand, double word score, triple word score, quadruple word score and add word length squared are applied after power.
And so, QUA played on will score (10²¹ + 21 + 1) × 2 = 2.000×10²¹ points. And so, QUA played on will score (10²¹ + 21 + 1) × 3 = 3.000×10²¹ points. And so, QUA played on will score (10²¹ + 21 + 1) × 4 = 4.000×10²¹ points. And so, QUA played on will score (10²¹ + 21 + 1) + 3² = 1.000×10²¹ points.
By the way, in the latest version 4.0 of Scrabble3D, Super Scrabble has been incorrectly spelt as Supper Scrabble. You can correct it in the next release, as soon as possible.
Last, but not the least, in Anadrome, multiple double word scores, triple word scores and quadruple word scores in the same word had been added and not multiplied.
On the other hand, from among double consonants, triple vowels, double letters with vertical symmetry, triple letters with horizontal symmetry and quadruple letters with rotational symmetry, same bonus tiles had been added and different bonus tiles had been multiplied.
For example,
BOX played on did not score (5 + 2 + 9!) × 9, but instead scored (5 + 2 + 9!) × 6 = 2177322 points. BOX played on did not score (5 + 2 + 9!) × 12, but instead scored (5 + 2 + 9!) × 7 = 2540209 points. BOX played on did not score (5 + 2 + 9!) × 16, but instead scored (5 + 2 + 9!) × 8 = 2903096 points.
Double letters with vertical symmetry will be applied to O and X, but not B. Triple letters with horizontal symmetry will be applied to B, O and X. Quadruple letters with rotational symmetry will be applied to O and X, but not B.
BOX played on did not score (5 × 9) + (2 × 9) + (9 × 9)!, but instead scored (5 × 6) + (2 × 6) + (9 × 6)! = 2.308×10⁷¹ points. BOX played on scored (5 × 3) + (2 × 12) + (9 × 12)! = 1.325×10¹⁷⁴ points. BOX played on did not score 5 + (2 × 16) + (9 × 16)!, but instead scored 5 + (2 × 8) + (9 × 8)! = 6.123×10¹⁰³ points.
By the way, in addition to all of that, for all of those guys who would not be aware about scoring system in Anadrome at all, I must also add too that, re-valuation of letters took precedence before power (or any of other single-letter bonuses), while single-letter bonuses did not take precedence before power (or any of other single-letter bonuses).
For example,
BY played on scored 5⁵⁰ + 50 = 8.882×10³⁴ points. BY played on scored 5¹⁰⁰ + 100 = 7.889×10⁶⁹ points. BY played on scored 5²⁵ + 25 = 298023223876953150 points. BY played on scored 510 - 5 + (10 - 5) = 3130 points. BY played on did not score 55! + 5!, but instead scored 5⁵ + 5! = 3245 points. BY played on did not score 55² + 5², but instead scored 5⁵ + 5² = 3150 points. BY played on scored 5⁵ + 5 = 3130 points. BY played on scored 1¹ + 1 = 2 points.
By the way, finally, I thought I would also explain to you about the reviver tile too.
For example, let us consider GALA already played on the 1st 4 tiles during any of the previous turns and you extend it to GALAXY during the current turn by adding XY in the last 2 tiles. Without any of the reviver tiles in the entire word, only the bonus tiles that are covered by XY will be considered and so the score will be: 4 × 1 × 2 × 1 × 9⁵ × 5 = 2361960 points. But, with at least 1 of reviver tiles in the entire word, all of bonus tiles that are covered by GALAXY will be considered and so the score will be: (9⁹ × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9⁹ × 9)² = 9.698×10⁴¹ points.
This is also by taking into account too the fact that because of the presence of at least 1 of ceiling tiles in the entire word, all of letters in the entire word have been re-valued to 9 points.
All of bonus tiles that are covered by the entire word will be considered either if the reviver tile will be covered by newer tiles in the current turn or if the reviver tile had already been covered by older tiles in any of the previous turns.
By the way, all of these of 40 fun bonus tiles are best to be played in computer either against human opponent players or against computer opponent players.
In all of real time physical games that are played, most of people would find out calculating scores with all of these of 40 fun bonus tiles to be too complicated and to be too confusing.
Although they are plenty of hours of fun, these word games will not become as popular as conventional Scrabble.
Most players will prefer simple games and not larger boards or scores with plenty of digits.
What do you think about adding a lot of fun bonus tiles like these at least in latest version 4.0 of Scrabble3D to make it even more interesting and to make it even more special?
Here are 10 of my most favourite Anadrome pairs, those of which are available and those of which are valid in CSW2024 dictionary: 1. Desserts, Stressed. 2. Redrawer, Rewarder. 3. Gateman, Nametag. 4. Oillets, Stellio. 5. Sagenes, Senegas. 6. Dormin, Nimrod. 7. Animal, Lamina. 8. Braced, Decarb. 9. Gelder, Redleg. 10. Reflow, Wolfer.
1. Desserts, Stressed. Also Dessert, Tressed. 2. Redrawer, Rewarder. Also Drawer, Reward. 5. Sagenes, Senegas. Also Agenes, Senega. 10. Reflow, Wolfer. Also Flow, Wolf.
FLOW played on will score 100 + 2¹⁰⁰ + 100 + 7¹⁰⁰ in forward direction for FLOW and 7¹⁰⁰ + 100 + 2¹⁰⁰ + 100 in backward direction for WOLF for a total of 6.469×10⁸⁴ points.
OBEY played on will score 100 + 5¹⁰⁰ + 100 + 5¹⁰⁰ in forward direction for OBEY and 5¹⁰⁰ + 100 + 5¹⁰⁰ + 100 in backward direction for YEBO for a total of 3.155×10⁷⁰ points.
For plus, times, power and mimic, these operations will be carried out on the current letter in the word (which will be placed on the top of any of either of these plus or times or power or mimic tiles) and the next letter in the word. However, next letter in the word will be the 1st letter in the word if the current letter in the word will be the last letter in the word.
Triple vowels will be applied to A and Y, but not B. Triple letters with horizontal symmetry will be applied to B, but not A or Y.
ABB played on will score 150 + 5 + 5¹⁵⁰ = 7.006×10¹⁰⁴ points. ABY played on will score 150 + 5 + 15¹⁵⁰ = 2.592×10¹⁷⁶ points. ABB played on will score 50 + 15 + 15⁵⁰ = 6.376×10⁵⁸ points. ABY played on will score 50 + 15 + 5⁵⁰ = 8.882×10³⁴ points.
Quadruple letters with rotational symmetry can be applied to the letters Z, O, N and S, but not E here.
ZONES played on will score 8² + 2² + 2¹ + 1¹ + 1⁸ = 72 points. ZONES played on will score 32 + 8⁸ + 8¹ + 1⁴ + 4³² = 18446744073726328873 points. ZONES played on will score 64 + 16 + 16¹ + 1⁸ + 8⁶⁴ = 6.277×10⁵⁷ points. ZONES played on will score 96 + 24 + 24 + 1¹² + 12⁹⁶ = 3.994×10¹⁰³ points. ZONES played on will score 128 + 32 + 32 + 1 + 16¹²⁸ = 1.341×10¹⁵⁴ points. ZONES played on will score 160 + 40 + 40 + 1 + 20 = 261 points.
All of the below mentioned images of more of examples of how scoring actually worked out in Anadrome website are only actually in memory of the most funnily ever playable Scrabble variants website of the most interesting word game ever over the Internet.
But in case of Anadrome website, the creator Jon is more of a reserved type, he is not reachable through any of means. But, as a Scrabble3D creator, you are at least reachable by this forum. On the other hand, the Woogles creator César Del Solar is at least reachable through Discord channels.
Only the e-mail address of admin@anadro.me to contact the administrator of Anadrome website had been mentioned in the Anadrome website whenever that it had been functional. By the way, there had also been no reply from that e-mail address too whenever I had sent an e-mail to that e-mail address at the time whenever that the Anadrome website had been functional. It looks like the e-mail address of admin@anadro.me does not get through once that Anadrome website has been shut down completely.
But as an alternative to the e-mail address of admin@anadro.me, recently, to contact the creator Jon of the Anadrome website, it looks like I found out his alternate e-mail address: j@nvm.io. I have sent an e-mail to him, 5 days ago. Let me see. Google said that Mark Nelson at mjn@anadrome.org and at mnelson@american.edu is the creator of Anadrome website. Although, he is not the creator, it looks like he still has played a few of his games there a few years ago and he still has touch with the game and its creator. He gave me the website of its creator: https://nvm.io.
ZOO played on will score 32²⁰⁰ + 200 + 8 = 2¹⁰⁰⁰ + 208 = 1.072×10³⁰¹ points. ZOO played on will score 8³⁰⁰ + 300 + 6 = 2⁹⁰⁰ + 306 = 8.453×10²⁷⁰ points. HOT played on will score 16²⁰⁰ + 200 + 2 = 2⁸⁰⁰ + 202 = 6.668×10²⁴⁰ points. HOT played on will score 8²⁰⁰ + 200 + 4 = 2⁶⁰⁰ + 204 = 4.150×10¹⁸⁰ points.
