Fast Word Quiz: Mobile version of Aerolith and Infiniwords with even more features Zitat · Antworten

Grid of words based anagramming mobile app
Fast word quiz
Back in 2022, when I was playing weekly online tournaments in ARFS, I felt that to become a better Scrabble player, it is important to study new words than to play fairly with the existing knowledge that I have. I had been using several anagramming software like Zyzzyva, Anagram Quizzer, Hoot for Collins, Xerafin, etc. to improve my vocabulary knowledge. All these tools quiz only one anagram at a time. If I occasionally encounter a 7 letter word or an 8 letter word that is unknown to me and that is difficult to guess, I get stuck in that word for a long time.

Some time later, I came to know about Aerolith WordWalls, a web application and Infiniwords, a Windows application which are similar to each other. I found anagramming much faster and also felt better visualization with these tools as it was possible for me to focus on all the words in the page which I know already at first and finally tackle the words which are unknown to me.

Inspired by them, I decided to create my own mobile app in Android with a lot more features than they contain which would better aid my word study. I thought a mobile app will be better as it can be better used while travelling or when away from my computer. I also thought of designing my mobile app such that it can be used either with 1 anagram per page or with 50 anagrams per page, by changing the number of rows and columns manually.

I designed my mobile app in such a way that it covers all words irrespective of payment requirements. Also, it can do untimed quizzes, in a relaxed manner, in such a way that anagrams can be tried to solve again and again until the answer is correct. Also, it can save the progress of solving words when my mobile app is exited and restarted or when the next page is visited and the current page is returned to after solving some of the words in that next page. This will make it possible for me to solve a few words every now and then, in the middle of other work, instead of spending a lot of time continuously on a group of anagrams.

I built my mobile app by using Android's SQLite database which has the cool feature of saving some useful information like solved status of words, tags, time taken to solve the word, wrong answers, etc. that will be retained when my mobile app is exited and restarted or when another page is visited. However, that useful information will be lost when my mobile app is uninstalled or when moving over to a new device. For that purpose, I have also added the functionality of exporting either only selected columns or all data in database to CSV files which can be imported at the time of re-installing my mobile app.

Fast word quiz opening screen: Top 50 high probability 7 letter anagrams in page 1

When Word Crow mobile app had been published in the Google Play Store, I was also inspired to publish my mobile app as other people will find it useful, but only after dramatic improvements. By using the default settings, I cover all anagrams page by page in descending order of probability for each of the word lengths which can be manually changed from the home page.

Each of the words can be optionally tagged at the time of submission of the words, according to anyone's level of mastery of the words. The tags can either be selected from the drop down list of existing tags or a new tag can be entered. Each tag has a colour associated with it, with which words will be displayed in that colour in the Report page. Tags can be changed either with a pop up dialogue box by entering the word and the alphagram in the home page or by a single click in the Report page if any of words are wrongly tagged. Initially, there are 12 tags: Known, Unknown, Prefix, Suffix, Past, Plural, Compound, Guessable, Learnt, New, Removed and No tag. New tags can be created and existing tags can be deleted depending upon anyone's tastes.

Tagging words in different colours at the time of submission of each of the words

The tags help anyone to focus on specific words for revision some time later on, after solving them. For example, if anyone wants to revise only the words unknown to them, then they can tag those words as Unknown and Filter By Tag, either for specific word length or for all word lengths. There is also an option to Reset By Tag for marking those words as unsolved and for re-solving those words. People with knowledge of SQL can also add their own columns to the SQL table and use more than one column for tagging.

SQL SELECT queries can be used for word filters that also makes it possible to create complex word filters than any of other mobile apps support. The 4 most commonly used SQL statements namely comparison operators (=, <, >, <=, >= and !=), IN / NOT IN, LIKE and BETWEEN have been made easier to type, although SQL supports a wide range of other operations like substring, concatenation, absolute value, in all, in any, etc. All complex word filters can also be saved under different names and loaded with ease.

The 4 most commonly used SQL statements have been made easier to type, although SQL supports even more functions

There are also menu options for anagrams and subanagrams, which are built by using SQL queries and hence faster than other mobile apps. They can be used with any number of blanks and along with other SQL statements. There is also a menu option for people with knowledge of SQL to directly make changes to the database by CREATE, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, ALTER, DROP and TRUNCATE queries.

In Android 14 and earlier, the menu can be accessed by clicking on the 3 horizontal lines on the top left corner of the page. In Android 15 and later, the display is edge-to-edge by default and so anyone needs to swipe right from the left edge of the screen to access the menu. In Android 15 and later, the menu can be accessed only with button navigation and not with gesture navigation in settings.

The navigation drawer menu contains a variety of configurations for my mobile app

The text colour is black by default for anyone not using the dark mode. However, care has also been taken to detect anyone using the dark mode and to change the display of all the black text to white for them.

Information about the presence of each of the words in CSW, NWL, CEL and WIMS dictionaries are also stored and displayed. (CEL refers to the Common English Lexicon used by Woogles and WIMS refers to the Wfind tool in Mathematical Recreations in https://wims.univ-cotedazur.fr). In addition, this also includes information about the earliest version of the CSW and NWL lexicons for the presence of each of the words, for CSW starting from 2007 and for NWL starting from 2006. A small number of words are not present in the NASPA School Word List and this is also included.

For real life Scrabble tournaments, the maximum length of the words which can be played is 15, but my mobile app also anyway includes words longer than 15 letters for completeness. The CSW, NWL and CEL long word lists have been taken from https://github.com/Fj00 and https://github.com/grubbcc/longlist.

Displaying similar words can be turned on and off from the menu. Similar words are displayed when a word is answered correctly in the Quiz page or when a word is long clicked in the Report page. Similar words include prefixes, suffixes, both prefixes and suffixes, anagrams, one letter change keeping position of other letters fixed, one letter change with other letters at any position, one letter addition and one letter drop. What prefixes and suffixes to display can be configured by the user and whether first letter is to be doubled or dropped for prefixes and whether last letter is to be doubled or dropped for suffixes, each of them before what specific set of letters. Dropping E at the end and replacing Y at the end by I are included by default in the list of suffixes.

All similar words are shown for the word PERFECT

When my mobile app is installed for the first time, anyone can choose whether they want to choose CSW or NWL dictionary. There are options to do either quizzes with no blanks or quizzes with one blank separately. Initially, preparing regular database from the pop up or from the menu will take a few minutes and preparing blank database from the menu will take a few hours. Quizzes can be started in any 1 of the 5 ways: Change Word Length, Filter By Tag, Custom SQL Query, Search For Anagrams or Search For Subanagrams. Each of the options will display a pop up dialogue box from which users can choose whether they want to do either quizzes with no blanks or quizzes with one blank, display all anagrams or only unsolved anagrams, for specific word length or for all word lengths and what table column they want to sort anagrams by, including default SQL insertion order and random order, either in ascending order or in descending order and with anagrams with more than one answers, SQL aggregation functions like Count, Sum, Average, Minimum and Maximum can also be used.

Blank quizzes of 7 letters which have only 1 answer in random order

Each of the fully solved anagrams in the quiz will be marked in green colour and they will not be replaced by other anagrams in their respective places. However, they can be removed if the user chooses displaying only unsolved anagrams from the pop up dialogue box. Each of the anagrams displays number of solved answers and total number of answers. This and the green colour for fully solved anagrams can be hidden from the menu by user's settings. However, the total score for the entire quiz and the total score for the current page are always displayed at the top of the quiz, along with the page number, total number of pages and the message for each solved word: Correct Answer, Wrong Answer, Already Solved and Anagram Not Here, either in green colour for valid words in dictionary or in red colour for invalid words in dictionary.

Other features in my mobile app include changing the number of rows, number of columns and the font size of the anagrams, tag list, saved word filters and definitions for people with vision issues. Letters in each of the anagrams can be sorted either alphabetically, vowels first, consonants first, increasing points, decreasing points or in random order either in ascending order or in descending order. Page summary of all solved words in each of the pages can also be displayed along with their associated tags. Words can either be cleared or not and last solved words can either be saved or not in the Enter Answer text box after submitting them at user's settings for Correct Answer, Wrong Answer, Already Solved and Anagram Not Here. Anyway, there are also options for manually clearing and for manually loading last solved words in the home page. Timestamp is also recorded at the time of correctly solving each of the words.

When any of the anagrams in the quiz is clicked, all its solved words are displayed at the bottom of the quiz along with their front hooks, back hooks, definitions, tags assigned to them, the earliest versions of CSW, NWL, CEL and WIMS dictionaries in which each of the words had been first introduced, page number, position number in the page and the order of the word in descending order of probability for that specific word length, in the colours that are associated with the tags assigned to each of the words. Only the solved word along with all those details are also displayed at the time of correctly solving any of the words. When any of the anagrams in the quiz is long clicked, all its unsolved words along with all those details are displayed in a pop up dialogue box.

The Report page displays information about time taken to solve each of the words, tags assigned to them, wrong answers, etc. in different colours

Fast word study
This is another companion mobile app to my quizzing mobile app, which contains all the above mentioned features except for quizzing. It only contains words, but not the anagrams that are associated with them. It does not mark words as solved, it does not track the time taken to solve each of the words, it does not track wrong answers and it does not contain the number of solved words for each of the anagrams. It can best be used to choose different tags from the drop down box at the top of the page and quickly mark the words in different colours, depending upon user's level of mastery of each of the words, just by a single click.
